Here, everyone is a minority

Some time in the next five years Leicester will become the first English city where everyone is a member of some ethnic or religious minority. The schools are already there. By 2007, only 44% of pupils across the city were ethnically white. By 2015 at the latest, the adult population will be less than half white. Of course there are parts of every city in England where white people are a minority, but they are only parts. In Leicester this is the situation in the city as a whole. An enormous transformation is under way, and no one outside seems to have noticed. But does this make the city a model for our future? Or is it a proof that mass immigration brings unmanageable strains?

Al-Qa’ida leader charged in Leicester

Two men went before Leicester magistrates this afternoon charged with ‘directing’ and membership of the al-Qa’ida network.

The men, named as Baghdad Meziane, 37 and Brahim Benmerzouga, 30, were both remanded in custody and will appear at Leicester Crown Court next Thursday. They were both arrested as a result of a joint operation between Leicestershire constabulary and the Metropolitan Police Service’s Anti Terrorist Branch.

Meziane, of Rolleston Street, Leicester, and Benmerzouga, of Prospect Hill, Leicester, were accused of belonging to al-Qa’ida, and conspiring to raise money to fund terrorism. Benmerzouga is further charged with possessing 19 videos containing visual images intended to stir up racial hatred. It is also alleged he was in possession of a solar powered battery pack in circumstances that would give rise to suspicion it could be used for an act of terrorism.

Non-Muslim students at Islamic school forced to wear headscarves

Female students at a new Islamic school will be made to wear head scarves regardless of their religion, it was revealed yesterday.

The Madani High School in Leicester will be required by law to accept 10 per cent of its 600 pupils from a non-Muslim background.

But girls who are not Muslim will still have to abide by a rule insisting all female pupils cover their heads as part of the uniform.

Anti-terror police at universities

Counter-terrorism officers are being stationed in universities at risk of being targeted by extremists, it has been reported.

Universities minister David Lammy said a number of particular institutions had been identified to work closely with police.

In an interview for BBC Radio 4′s The Report, Mr Lammy said: “We have identified universities for whom the risk is greater and they have to work closely with Special Branch, and so I think it is a partnership between leadership at universities and the police.

Turkish girl, 16, buried alive for talking to boys

Death reopens debate over ‘honour’ killings in Turkey, which account for half of all the country’s murders.

Turkish police have recovered the body of a 16-year-old girl they say was buried alive by relatives in an “honour” killing carried out as punishment for talking to boys.

The girl, who has been identified only by the initials MM, was found in a sitting position with her hands tied, in a two-metre hole dug under a chicken pen outside her home in Kahta, in the south-eastern province of Adiyaman.

England is a “cesspit” and breeding ground for fundamentalist Muslims, the Nobel laureate and political activist Wole Soyinka has said in an interview in which he also accused Britain of allowing the existence of “indoctrination schools”.

Hanley mosque to be finished by August

BUILDING work on a controversial £1.6 million mosque and community centre is expected to be completed by August.

Builders moved on to the Hanley site last January and work has now passed the halfway mark.

Censorship by intimidation

A study by the University of Exeter’s European Muslim Research Centre claims that a rise in the number of hate crimes against Muslims in London is being encouraged by mainstream politicians and sections of the media. In the Guardian Vikram Dodd has written:

The study mentions no newspapers or writers by name, but alleges that the book Londonistan, by the Mail writer Melanie Phillips, played a part in triggering hate crimes.

MP urges huge immigration cut to limit population growth

Annual immigration must be slashed by three-quarters if the UK population is not to reach 70 million by 2030, a senior MP warned today.

Tory former minister Nicholas Soames said failing to bring immigration under control “very substantially” could even lead to the total rising to 85 million.
